Contemporary Art Creates the Backdrop for the Modern Nutcracker Ballet
Local artists star in the Modern Nutcracker Ballet just as much as the dancers. D.C.’s community of creatives is responsible for much of the set, which is what brings the classic show into the 21st century. These renowned visual and installation artists have created contemporary backdrops so ethereal that you can stay for 30 minutes after the show to take a closer look (and even bid on some of the pieces in a silent auction).
However, the backdrop is only part of the art. The Aru Dell’Arte Dance Company brings a cast of diverse characters to the stage, featuring gender-neutral pairings and performers of all backgrounds. They dance out the classic tale to the original score but put a fresh twist on it that will keep you engaged as you watch on in awe from the audience. Keep score as Clara and the Nutcracker Prince battle it out against the evil Mouse King and his minions, waiting for the holiday spirit to reign supreme (as it always does). The ballet comes to the Source Theatre’s stage from December 10th through the 23rd. Ticket prices vary.
